E.A Duppon: Varieté (D 1925) - UA

Friday, 15 September 2023, 20.00
BOZAR - Henry Le Beuf Hall, Brussels

"VARIETÉ," a melodrama from 1925 directed by Ewald André Dupont, is considered one of the greatest exports of Weimar cinema. Emil Jannings' portrayal of Huller and the sensational trapeze scenes captivated audiences worldwide. The cinematographer Karl Freund's innovative cinematography, stylistically situated between Expressionism and Film Noir, secured the film's place in cinematic history.

For the silent film series on ARTE, Uzbek-Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin (*1957) was commissioned by ZDF/ARTE to create a new orchestral film score. The premiere of this score will take place on September 15th at BOZAR, Henry Le Beuf Hall. The Belgian National Orchestra will perform under the direction of Dirk Brossé.

The film will be broadcast on ARTE TV on September 25, 2023, at 11:05 PM. "VARIETÉ" will remain available in the ARTE Mediathek until December 25, 2023.
